Experimenting with Sculpture Again.
By offering a sculpture art camp this summer, I gave myself permission to play with 3D art and materials again. This camp will cover a range of building techniques and materials such as clay, found objects and cardboard.
Some artist I see easily spit out beautiful cohesive works, and are able to dive into the intricacies within a chosen subject or process. For me however, I feel as though I can’t settle into a specialty until I’ve experimented with the all the art making possibilities - and by process of elimination, slowly throw out the ones that don’t suit me and keep aspects of ones that do.
That’s the whole reason I chose sculpture as a concentration in school. It was the one area where I could play with the broadest range of techniques and processes!
Scupture Processes shown above:
Modeling form in clay (coil building & armature), assemblage of found objects, mold-making & multiples, creating with cardboard, and building an environmental house model.
My absolute favorite - - THE ASSEMBLAGE PROJECT, hands down. I loved piecing together a composition and thinking about how to lead the eye around this scene of familiar objects in an unfamiliar setting.
Second favorite - - Coil Building a form with clay. This is a difficult process to control, but I liked building from the bottom up layer by layer in the round. Plus air dry clay is not my favorite. I like the old fashioned kiln fire clay.
