Magic & Instinct
I love thinking about myth, folklore and magic - the way stories are created to contain lessons and questions.
It really gets me excited for some reason. The fantastical, unusual, unorthodox. I remember falling in love with shows and books that take you away to another land - and how your imagination as a child makes the world feel SO big. Playing in trees and walking inside a garden, building hideaways in the woods. Pretend possibilities light up my brain.
But also mixing that with being here now, and the instinctual, emotional, immediate and even tactile qualities of what it’s like to be in the present moment - living where I live, and interacting with the diverse elements around me.
Thinking about art in this way reminds me of Native American works - totems and patterns made by indigenous tribes specific to place. Armed with oral stories of ancestors, they build, create and teach with elements sourced from the land.
I like the idea of collecting elements to then collage together - sourcing from the past and present.
And thinking about weaving together pieces that fit into an instinctual narrative.
responding and building off of ancient myths and legends with elements from my own reality. - Creating a lineage of pieces, hidden truths and clues to our own instincts.
